Razer Nabu Review - Review 2022
The Razer Nabu is essentially a Nabu X with a display. It'southward a wristband that tracks bones fitness stats and pushes notifications from your smartphone to your wrist. It too shares your social media info with other Nabu users, and Razer plans to add ARGs (alternate reality games) at some betoken in the hereafter. But like the Nabu Ten, these features are just underwhelming compared with a dedicated fitness tracker or smartwatch. And for a $50 premium over the original, the $99.99 Nabu feels overpriced.
Design
Like the Nabu X, the Nabu is made of blackness rubber with green highlights. The material attracts grit and debris in its tiny ridges, equally you can see in the prototype below. Instead of using fastening holes and prongs like the Nabu 10, the Nabu uses a magnetic clasp, which routinely snagged my wrist hair fifty-fifty when it was already closed.
The band comes in small-medium and medium-big sizes. Small-medium measures 2.33 by 2.96 past 0.63 inches (HWD), and medium-large measures two.51 by three.15 past 0.63 inches. I reviewed the medium-large version, which was a bit too big for my svelte wrists, then I switched out the default clasp for an included smaller replacement clasp.
The 128-by-sixteen-pixel OLED screen sits in the heart of the band, giving it a bulky, rigid feel similar to the Microsoft Band 2 ($59.99 at Amazon) . Also like Microsoft'southward fettle tracker, all information scrolls by on the Nabu's horizontal screen like a pixelated news ticker. Text is large and vivid enough to read indoors and out.
A single button sits on the height edge of the Nabu, to a higher place the display. Information technology's your only way of decision-making the band, but it'south also shallow and offers petty feedback; I was frequently unable to tell if my presses had registered. Like the Fitbit Charge HR ($85.eleven at Amazon) or the Garmin Vivosmart Hr, pressing the Nabu's button cycles through its features. You tin view your calories, altitude, steps, and notifications, including email and texts. You can agree the button down to start the stopwatch office, so hold information technology again for a few seconds to go far end.
The Nabu is powered by a lithium polymer battery that's practiced for up to six days of employ. Similar the Nabu X, it uses a proprietary cable that clips onto the back. With an IP54 rating, the band tin withstand dust, pelting, sweat, and splashes from the sink, but it'due south not suitable for full submersion.
Pairing and App
The Nabu is compatible with iOS 7 devices including the iPhone 5 and newer, and Android devices running Android four.three and later. The pairing process is easy; you simply need to download the free Razer Nabu app and follow the on-screen prompts. I paired the band with a Samsung Galaxy S6 in a few seconds.
Once paired, yous can connect additional Nabu bands, view the bombardment level for each, and make various adjustments in the Settings carte du jour. Here you tin can select what kind of data shows up on the display (agile minutes, calories, distance, and steps), switch between a 12-hour or 24-hour clock, choose betwixt three screen brightness levels, and adjust the screen's time-out elapsing between 3, 5, 10, or 15 seconds. You tin also toggle whether flicking your wrist will activate the screen, and whether the screen will show your last-viewed message or the clock when you wake it.
There are a few more basic options. You lot tin select which apps send notifications to the Nabu, and send test messages in order to figure out what vibration level you lot prefer: low, medium, or loftier. The text scroll speed besides has 3 settings. Unfortunately, there is no style to customize vibrations based on the kind of notification like you can with the Martian Alpha T10.
Fitness and Additional Features
Unlike the Nabu X, which requires a suite of apps to work, all fitness stats prove upwards on the Nabu app's forepart page. It displays your active minutes, calories burned, miles traveled, number of steps taken and the time spent asleep. There's no heart rate monitoring or GPS here, so those stats are out.
As a fettle tracker, the Nabu counts mileage and steps nigh too as the Timex Metropolitan+, which I wore while testing the Nabu. Razer offers little in the way of fettle guidance. If yous want a digital bus, you should check out the Moov Now or the Jawbone UP24, both of which offer fun workout suggestions for beginner athletes.
Razer'due south social features from the Nabu 10 return here. One of these features allows you to bandy Facebook and Twitter handles by shaking the hand of someone else wearing a Nabu device. You can as well use the free Nabu Gamers app to view the handle and history of friends that game on Steam. These are interesting ideas, but they depend entirely on other users also wearing Nabu devices, and I didn't encounter whatsoever while testing. In add-on, the Nabu Gamers app frequently crashed or refused to open.

You tin also apply the ring to remotely control music playback and your phone'southward photographic camera shutter, depending on what blazon of device yous employ. Under the Activities page in the iOS app, yous tin can choose between music playback and camera command. Android users can but control music. Either way, you need to open the camera or music app on your phone, so cycle through options on the band until you reach the Remote Command function. After that, hold the button to select the style, and so press the button to activate the action. It worked well in testing, but the controls are limited, specially for music. And you can assign only i of three playback controls, including Play/Pause, Next Track, or Previous Rail.
The Nabu'southward about interesting feature, Razer's augmented reality games, are still not withal available, and there is no word on a release date.
Conclusions
The Razer Nabu adds a brandish to the Nabu 10 for an extra $fifty, just I wouldn't say the display adds an boosted $50 of utility. In addition, the college price makes it more difficult for the Nabu to compete against an actual fitness tracker or smartwatch, or even some other hybrid device, like the Timex Metropolitan+. The Metropolitan+ also tracks basic fitness stats similar distance and steps, just looks a lot sharper than the Nabu. If you lot're willing to spend a fleck more on a dedicated fitness tracker, the Fitbit Charge Hr gets you more detailed fitness tracking and a heart rate sensor. If information technology's games you're after, the Pebble Time is home to a number of fun apps. And if you don't need the display, the Nabu 10 is still available for half the toll.
